Books about Food This is a set of books that point out the diversity in diet and food choices. These books show the world of food not as a limitation but as a great cultural adventure.
Norah Dooley's series about food is a fantastic tour of cuisine and America. Below are pictures of a few suggestions of her books.
I bring these books into my son's classroom to begin the discussion of what kids eat at home that my son can eat, as well. Most of the time I get great ideas from these kids and end up on the phone looking for recipes.
The Norah Dooley series involves the telling of the story an ethnic neighborhood through the dishes they serve.
At the end of the books are all of the recipes listed in the book.
Suggested also are books that speak to ingredients that are allowed on the gluten free diet such as: rice and corn. Gary Paulsen is a highly regarded children's author. His book The Tortilla Factory is fabulous.!
Another fabulous author is Kevin Henkes . In fact, he is one of my favorites. The character Lilly that he has created is a dynamic child. Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse tells the story of Lilly bringing to school something that she can hardly contain. My son can hardly contain that he has Celiac Disease. I have used this book to help talk about self control and discretion. If it doesn't help with that, I am sure you will enjoy it anyways!
Lastly, Math Potatoes , can help kids to utilize things that are gluten free in the classroom. When the class uses clay or paper mache my little one panics, although he has been told as long as he doesn't eat it, it is ok. Sometimes, a little creative preparation in the classroom can help lots of ideosynchrocies that can end up being a challenge.
